The full free theme updates from GitHub through a bundled update checker, not through the WordPress.org directory. If you’re expecting an update and don’t see a notice, here’s what to check.
- Confirm a newer release exists. Check the GitHub releases for a version higher than the one you have installed. The checker only flags an update when a newer release is published.
- Allow for the check schedule. WordPress checks for theme updates on a schedule rather than instantly, so a notice may not appear the moment a release goes out.
- Confirm you installed the full theme. The Lite edition from WordPress.org updates through the directory instead, so it won’t use the GitHub checker.
- Look in the normal place. When the checker flags an update, it appears under Appearance, Themes and on the Updates screen, the same as any other theme update.
Once a notice appears, you update from there and the new release is pulled from GitHub.
